Motivating Factors
The motivating factors that made the patriots do what they did were their beliefs and things that they cared about. Patriots fight for their family, their freedom, and their love for the country that they live in. The ways that they fought differed in many different ways. Some patriots fought with guns and cannons, while others used their words, or a pen and paper to get their points across.
Benjamin Martin fought for his family which is what he loved more than anything in the world. He did not want them to have to live their lives like they had already been living them, under British rule. So he rose to up to the challenge of commanding a part of the army that fought the redcoats for their freedom against the king. He fought with violence and bloodshed to get what he wanted. When the British threatened and even killed his family, Ben fought for what he thought was right, For no one to ever have to go through what he and his remaining family had to go through.
Paul Revere, another American patriot, did not fight when he became considered an American patriot. He instead, risked his life to save the lives of many others. He ran through the city screaming “the redcoats are here!” He went to go check if they were coming by land or by sea so he could prepare the patriots who were fighting with weapons, so they would not be killed when they did not know if the British were coming by land or by sea. He was willing to risk everything he had just so the Americans could have a heads up on the obviously stronger British army. He was selfless and was more worried about the future of others rather than worrying about the consequences of whether he would be caught or not for treason.
Nathan Hale was probably the most selfless of all the patriots we have learned about this year. He was an American spy that got information from the British for the U.S. army. He did this to try and help the fight against British rule by giving the American soldiers an idea of when and where the redcoats would be attacking. He put his life in danger and eventually lost his life when he finally caught and found guilty for treason. He was hung by the British. But before he died he said a very famous quote that will be in history books for ever. “Give me liberty, or give me death!” He was just proving the fact that if he could not get liberty from the redcoats, then he might as well die. That is how strongly he believed in gaining liberty from them. He sadly never lived to see the U.S. end the British rule over them.
Thomas Jefferson was a patriot who used words. He used words to get his point across in writing, public speaking, and in the writing of the Declaration of Independence. All the signers of this document were patriots for deciding that they were sick of the British rule over them and deciding to fight back and gain their freedom.
These are some American patriots that we have learned about and why they did what they did. And also how they became American hero’s and patriots that will forever be remembered for their courageous acts of selflessness and love for their country and what they believed in. They all changed American history and the rights of all the people living in this country.
